The chapter's Vice-President, attorney Daniel Haverman, reported the achievement at the chapter's January 11th meeting.

BOCA BUSINESS EXCHANGE REPRESENTED AT THE TOYS IN THE SUN RUN

The 2011 Toys in the Sun Run was a huge success as usual despite the
weather. Over $325,000 was collected for the Joe Dimaggio Children's
Hospital and nearly 40,000 toys were also collected.

John Saluk and Dr. Rick Marrotte, two members of the Boca Business Exchange
Chapter of BNI, rode in the event and delivered over a dozen toys on behalf of the
Chapter.

The ride began a little late from the staging area at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallendale
Beach, FL. Just as the ride began, around 10am, a nasty rain storm hit the area with
driving rain and gusty winds. Many riders who were not prepared for the weather,
dropped out of the ride before it really got started. "We had boots full of water and soaked
clothes, but it was for a great cause.", said Dr. Marrotte.

The ride terminated, as in years past, at Markham Park in Weston where there was music, food, an antique motorcycle show and many vendors. "Many thanks to those who donated unwrapped toys from our Chapter," said Jon Saluk.

Gary Broidis' Second Retail Bus Tour a Success

The Retail Bus Tour, Inc. (www.retailbustour.com), a new marketing and networking event specifically designed for the shopping center industry made its’ way throughout Miami-Dade County last Thursday with over 150 real estate and retail professionals on three chartered buses. With the assistance of three Dade County police escorts, the Tour covered over 35 major shopping centers while making stops throughout the day at Main Street in Miami Lakes, The Shops at Midtown Miami and Miracle Marketplace in Coral Gables.

During this full-day event, property owners, brokers and retail tenants learned about the market, properties, vacancies, expanding retailers and networked with each other all day. According to BNI member Gary Broidis and Larry Brooks, Founders of the Retail Bus Tour, there were people in attendance from as far as Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. While the moderators on each bus provided detailed information on each property featured on the Tour, the property owners and/or representatives also provided further details about future plans for the properties along with incentives being offered to the brokerage and retail community.

According to Aaron Fox, Director of Real Estate for Southeast Florida for Subway who was in attendance and also attended the first Retail Bus Tour in Broward County last October, “we had discussions that led to store openings in Broward and Palm Beach counties” and added “it’s great to network and would take months to get all this information.”

Architect Ken Hirsch presenter at the International Subtropical Cities 2011 Conference

Architect Ken Hirsch AIA LEED AP, president of Hirsch Architects, Inc. was a presenter at the International Subtropical Cities 2011 Conference in Ft Lauderdale. The conference was co hosted by Florida Atlantic University (FAU) School of Architecture and Queensland University of Technology, Australia. His presentation was titled Creating a Sustainable Vision.

The learning objectives were to:

1. Experience a new awareness of thinking about the past, near term and distant future in a holistic way.
2. Understand the concepts of sustainability, vision, mission, the visioning process and charrettes.
3. Acquire new distinctions in the language of social, economic and environmental issues.
4. Gain confidence in the process of creating a vision through integrated design and collaboration.

As a follow up to the presentation to the international group, Hirsch was asked to present the concept to a group of senior architecture students at FAU. The concept was well received and led to the role as “critic” for the senior class project. The project involves master planning the Ft Lauderdale Las Olas corridor.

Boca Raton's Business Exchange Chapter of BNI has won the 2010 Founder's Award. The chapter is one of only 89 winners out of thousands of chapters in 51 countries.

BNI Founder's Awards are issued to BNI chapters that represent the top ten percent of the organization in terms of performance. They must have a minimum of twenty members, be nominated by the local BNI Director, and be approved by the Founder. These chapters are specifically recognized for excellent performance relating to referrals, visitors, new members, commitment, enthusiasm, and - most importantly - attitude.

Directors nominate chapters in their region to receive the Founder's Award. They are provided to no more than ten percent of the chapters in a region in any given year. They are also announced in SuccessNet Online.

BNI Boca Raton Business Exchange donates gifts for holidays

Debra Juliano, DJID, Inc. and Nancy Suchoff, Snap Creative Group, spent a holiday weekend morning shopping for underprivileged families in the Boca Raton area on behalf of the BNI Business Exchange Chapter. In lieu of the grab bag gifts the members have traditionally exchanged at the chapter's annual holiday party, it was decided to donate cash and buy gifts for The Giving Tree, a year-round program of community giving benefiting seniors and underprivileged children in Boca Raton. Approximately $350 was collected and spent at the local Borders Books on educational toys and books and to buy Publix Gift Cards for the families.

BNI Business Exchange Celebrates 10 Years in Boca Raton!

The BNI (Business Network International) Boca Raton Wednesday morning chapter, also known as BNI Business Exchange, has 46 members representing almost 40 professions from Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Last week, the chapter celebrated its 10th birthday with a festive breakfast at its weekly meeting at Maggiano's.

With cupcakes "designed" by Debra Juliano, ASID, the chapter toasted original members Brian Lipshy and Jeff Gordon, along with other members who have been in the chapter for five or more years.

Once a small group of a dozen or so professionals and business owners, the chapter has outgrown three local meeting places, finally landing at Maggiano's in 2004. The members regularly pass 150 - 200 referrals a month, giving them the advantage of having a sales force working for them every day.

BNI Boca Business Exchange Represented in Charity Golf Tournament.

The First Annual PROPEL charity golf tournament was held at The Boca Lago Country Club
on Friday October 16th, 2009. PROPEL was created to provide educational funding for
students in the Greater Boca Raton area. Former Police Chief, Andrew Scott, kcked off the
event with a shot-gun start at 12:30 pm.

The Boca Business Exchange was well represented at this worthwhile event by two of its
professional members; ISA Claims President, Dan Alba and Optometric Physicain, Dr. Rick
Marrotte . "The weather was hot and steamy, but Dan and I had alot of fun," said Dr. Marrotte.
The duo combined with 2 other golfers to place 10th in a field of 22 teams.

For the past 25 years, WPTV Channel 5 in West Palm Beach has been the lead sponsor for the Food For Families food drive during the months of October and November and this year SunCoast Bank is co-sponsoring the evert. Each year the food drive collects several thousand pounds of canned goods and other non-perishable food to donate to those less fortunate at Thanksgiving time.

Dr. Richard Marrotte, an Optometric Physician practicing in Boca Raton for 24 years, has registered as an official Food For Families drop off location. Food donations can be brought to his office at the For Eyes Optical Center in Boca Raton at 8220 Glades Rd.

For (2) cans of food or other non-perishable food items, the donor receives 10% off their eye exam and 10% off their eyeglass purchase. BNI Members give helping hand to Boca Helping Hands

Jeff Pasternack, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and Lisa Elkan, Ironstone Bank are working to get the word out about the desperate need for office supplies, computer equipment and furniture by Boca Helping Hands. A fire destroyed the non-profit's Boca Raton offices, assistance center and job center Monday night. Their food pantry was not effected.

The Boca Helping Hands website will be updated within the day with the information below. In the meantime, here is a list of things they need right away:

Office Furniture – desks, chairs, file cabinets, shelving, etc. for six offices and the reception area

Jemstone Construction helps Boynton Soup Kitchen expand

The Soup Kitchen, an independent volunteer organization relying solely on donations from the community, unveiled its new 1,000-square-foot storage addition March 20.For the past 23 years, the kitchen, 8645 W. Boynton Beach Blvd., has consistently grown and serves on average 500 meals every day to the needy and poor in the area.With the Soup Kitchen being a private facility receiving no state funding, a donation was needed to make the extra storage space a reality.

Jemstone Construction Group, Inc. of Boynton Beach offered to play the role of general contractor. Jemstone Vice President Debbie Marzano said it was her husband Michael's idea to volunteer the company's services for two reasons.

"He has always wanted to work for a soup kitchen since his dad did it four days a week for 10 years. Also, with the economy the way it is, some of his former co-workers might be eating at this soup kitchen right now," she said.

In addition to free meals, the kitchen provides baby products, toys, toiletries and basic supplies to anyone in need and it conducts an after-school program for children with reading instruction.

John Burke, the kitchen's spokesman, said the addition would more than double the size of the facility.

Boca BNI Weekend Bikers Raise money again for Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation.

What do four successful businessmen have in common besides BNI? They all love riding their motorcycles on the weekends. And on Sunday February 9, 2009, they rode together to raise funds for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The PBTF funds research to find a cure for devastating childhood brain tumors.

Mike Marzano of Jemstone Construction rode for the first time in the annual event and said, “I left my house very early so I wouldn’t miss it.” Joseph Frank, owner of TriCounty Printing, rode in the event last year, “I wouldn’t miss it. I had a great time last year.”

American Pioneer Mortgage President, Kurt Heide, also riding in the annual event for the first time said, “I really enjoyed it and will plan to be here again next year.” The fourth rider, Dr. Rick Marrotte , Board Certified Optometric Physician of Custom Vision Care, has ridden in the event 3 times and commented, “This event is a great excuse to ride our motorcycles and raise money for this great charity.”

Parts of I-95 and I-595 were shut down for several hours Sunday so an estimated 31,000 bikers could make the trip from Pompano Harness Track to Markham Park. Several thousand spectators lined Interstate 595 to wave as the holiday bikers roared by on all sorts of motorcycles. The toys collected will be donated to needy South Florida families and the money raised from entrance donations going to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood.

Several Boca Business Exchange BNI members participated and collected nearly 25 toys. Joe Frank, Jonathan Saluk and current BNI chapter President Dr. Rick Marrotte represented the Boca Chapter riding in the event.

“This is a great event. It’s the largest, single day motorcycle event for charity in the country,” said Dr. Marrotte.

“We were happy to represent the generosity of our BNI Chapter and had another great excuse to get out and ride our motorcycles,” he said. The event has grown every year and members of the Boca Business Exchange BNI Chapter have been riding in the event for the past three years.

Jemstone Construction breaks ground on addition to Boynton Beach Soup Kitchen

Amid much fanfare, Jemstone Construction broke ground on the new addition to the Boynton Beach Soup Kitchen on December 10th. In the spirit of giving, Jemstone is coordinating the activities of 22 subcontractors, each of whom are donating time and materials to help the soup kitchen grow to meet the future needs of area residents.

"Even in good times, the soup kitchen was constantly pressed for space and with a worsening economic environment, the need is even more urgent," said Debbie Marzano, Vice-President of Jemstone Construction. "As members of this community, we feel strongly about donating our expertise and giving back to our neighbors. The addition is going to help the soup kitchen with its new program for women and babies.

On Saturday September 27th the Boca Raton Business Exchange group held its first golf tournament at Winston Trails Golf Club in Lake Worth. They had a great turnout of 22 golfers for the scramble format, team play tournament. There was a $20 per person additional fee that was allotted for a donation to charity, and a prize given to the winning team.

The tournament raised $230 to be donated to Tiffany Joswick's goal of raising money in the "The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk" that will be held October 18th at Mizner Park in Boca Raton. The winning team was lead by Bob Rathmanner from Pennmanner Management Company and two of his guests. Bob currently has an application pending with BNI. They won the tournament with an 18 hole score of 64. Each of them will receive a $70 gift certificate to Houston's Restaurant as their prize.

The participants missed all of the Boca Raton BNI members that were not able to attend, and look forward to having another tournament next year.

Jeff Pasternack presents Hospice by the Sea with $10,000 grant

Hospice by the Sea has received a $10,000 grant from the Ernst and Gertrude Ticho Charitable Foundation to promote its 41-minute instructional DVD on caregiving.

The Ticho Foundation, based in Glen Echo, Maryland, honors the memory of internationally-known psychoanalysts, Drs. Ernst and Gertrude Ticho. They educated countless psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in techniques of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis and their research papers are still used around the world.

The grant will cover, in part, the costs of airing 30-second television spots to advertise Hospice by the Sea’s caregiver DVD, “A Lifeline for Caregivers.” The spots will run on cable and broadcast channels in Palm Beach and Broward counties.“

“ 'A Lifeline for Caregivers' shows family caregivers how to safely and properly care for their loved ones who are seriously ill,” says Paula Alderson, president and CEO of Hospice by the Sea. “Nearly 40 percent of caregivers have never had any formal training in caregiving, yet, often suddenly, are put in the role of having to handle skilled nursing tasks, such as dressing wounds and administering medications. This lack of education, coupled with the long and strenuous hours caregiving entails, causes anxiety, stress, depression, and fatigue. As a result, caregiver suffer higher-than-normal rates of accidents and illness. ”

“The Ticho Foundation chose to support 'A Lifeline for Caregivers' because of its potential to positively affect the mental well-being of caregivers," says Jeffrey Pasternack, a representative of the foundation. “ 'A Lifeline for Caregivers' is an important vehicle in Hospice by the Sea’s Sylvia Wolens Caregiver Education Program, a program that provides caregiving skills, self-care techniques, and a resource library for family caregivers. The first of five Smile Express teeth whitening facilities will have its grand opening in Boca Raton on Thursday, April 10th. The interior design was done by BNI member Debra Juliano, ASID of DJID. Dr. Marrotte reports 'Dry eye syndrome' can afflict office workers

A recent article by Diane C. Lade of the Sun-Sentinel focuses new attention on the widespread problem of Dry Eye Syndrome in the younger working population, says Dr. Rick Marrotte of Boca Raton, FL (www.sun-sentinel.com/business/sfl-flhlpdry0303sbmar03,0,2800967.story)

Historically, dry eye sufferers have been older people whose eyes become naturally dryer with advancing age. In the past 8 to 10 years, more and more young people staring at a computer screen at work all day have developed symptoms of dry eyes.

Common symptoms include a gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes, a burning sensation, redness and eye fatigue. About 60 to 65 percent of patients don't progress beyond the disorder's first stages, but if left untreated some people can develop more serious complications, such as infections and corneal nerve damage.

Drinking more water, taking frequent breaks away from the screen and using artificial tears are just some of the ways to reduce Dry Eye Syndrome symptoms. With a reduction in blinking rate at the computer, soft contact lens wearers are particularly susceptible to dry eyes. Dr. Marrotte recommends getting a thorough evaluation and consider upgrading your contact lenses to one of the newer materials better able to handle the dehydration of water from the lenses.

“The most common types of occupations most at risk included accountants, software engineers, executive assistants and customer service representatives. Long-haul truckers and flight attendants are also very likely to develop Dry Eye Syndrome because of long hours in air-conditioned trucks or airplane cabins filled with pressurized, recirculated air,” says Dr. Marrotte.

Dry eye also can be part of medical health conditions, as well. Sjögren's syndrome that occurs in people with rheumatoid arthritis have a great tendency to develop, dry irritated eyes. Many blood pressure and sinus medications produce dry eyes as a common side effect.

The American Optometric Association compares Dry Eye Syndrome to the better-known carpal tunnel syndrome, another workplace disorder that involves the wrist rather than the eye. Some believe carpal tunnel can be caused by extended keyboard use.

Reverse Mortgages –Monday Morning Quarterbacking

Monday morning quarterbacking is “what if” or “he should have…” discussion. Kurt Heide, President of American Pioneer Mortgage Services Inc. presents a review as to the benefits of a reverse mortgage.

Reverse mortgages are increasingly becoming an important consideration to families trying to meet the high costs of living in retirement. A reverse mortgage is a mortgage on your home which allows you (62 years-of-age and older) to use the equity in your home to receive money without having to pay it back as long as you or your spouse live in the house. The programs are designed to help seniors remain in their homes comfortably during their retirement years. Some of the current reverse mortgage products are guaranteed by the government and were designed after consultation with AARP and others. Several other reverse mortgage products have been developed by lenders which offer variations on the government programs.

A very good article on reverse mortgages was published in the January-February 2008 edition of the AARP bulletin. In that article they state that over 340,000 seniors have taken out a reverse mortgage through the HECM program offered by FHA. The increasingly popular programs have been used seniors to enrich their lives as indicated by the testimonials in the article.

NBC aired a program in January that was not very favorable to the reverse mortgage programs. Unfortunately, NBC tied the reverse mortgage program with an annuity program offered by an insurance company. They are two separate programs: one offered by a lender and the other by an insurance company. To obtain accurate information on reverse mortgages, consult with a reverse mortgage specialist. An insurance specialist can tell you the plusses and minuses of the annuity. Much of the negativity was focused on the annuity program.

NBC indicated that the costs of the HECM mortgage were very expensive. The costs are very similar to those of obtaining an FHA loan when you are buying a home. One of the major costs in a HECM loan is the 2% FHA mortgage insurance premium (MIP). This premium is charged on all FHA loans. With the reverse mortgage the MIP guarantees that FHA will continue with the payment terms of your agreement even if the lender declares bankruptcy. In today’s environment many would consider it a cheap price to pay for that security! The MIP also works to allow the lender to lend you more money because it also protects them if the home cannot be sold for sufficient funds to pay off the loan balance. Thus, even though the HECM program is more costly than other programs, most choose one of them because they can get more money and more money is usually what it is all about.

Now, back to the Monday morning quarterbacking; one of our neighbors recently died. She passed her condominium to her heirs. Over ninety percent of all inherited property is sold by the heirs as compared to those that retain possession (the number is closer to 100% in our neighborhood). The heirs placed the condominium on the market and received an offer of only $225,000. The heirs rejected this very low offer and sold it for a little more. Other heirs are having a difficult time selling their inherited property in the current market. When they cannot sell the property, they have the burden of carrying the expenses of that property. A reverse mortgage presents a viable option for seniors to pass more money on easily to their children.

In the first example above, the appraised value of the home was about $350,000. If the owner was 85 years-old, she could accomplish a Reverse Mortgage and take out a little over $267,000 if the property was not mortgaged (the amount would be reduced by any mortgage or liens on the property). This money would be tax free. This person could then distribute the funds as she sees fit. The owner should consult an estate attorney as how best to achieve her objectives in passing on the money while still alive. This program could also be used to reduce estate taxes (consult an estate attorney of financial planner).

Jemstone Construction rallies to build Soup Kitchen in Boynton Beach

Jemstone Construction is coordinating and overseeing an effort to expand the West Boynton Soup Kitchen on Boynton Beach Blvd. The Soup Kitchen, which currently serves over 500 meals a day to the homeless and the working poor, wants to expand.

“This is a project that's very close to my heart" says Michael Marzano, GC and President of Jemstone Construction Group. "A couple years ago my father passed away. During his wake, my three brothers and I learned that he was volunteering at a soup kitchen for many years and was the head chef for most of them. He did this without his family knowing and without any fanfare. He was a tremendous help to the kitchen and many of the people he volunteered with showed their respect and attended his funeral. I have been wanting to volunteer at a kitchen like this but for one reason or excuse, still had not. When the manager of the Boynton soup kitchen reached out to me for help in building this addition, I found myself thinking how God works in many ways to bring us peace and happiness."

And so Michael and his wife Debbie Marzano, VP of Jemstone, are asking the sub-contractors they already work with and others in the Palm Beach community to assist in this undertaking. The Marzanos already helped build a house for Habitat for Humanity, and know the challenge, but are confident that there are suppliers who will step up to the plate to donate materials and equipment and skilled labor to volunteer their time.

Michael recalls the satisfaction of volunteering on a project like this. "I remember having 20 to 25 volunteers from a local bank come out and lay sod. I had to show them which side faced the sun but they got the job done and I think they felt good at the end of the day."

Action Courier Helps Feed Families in Need

Action Courier Service helped provide holiday food for 185 families in southern Palm Beach County this weekend by trucking ten pallets of food from the Goodwill distribution center in West Palm Beach to Cason United Methodist Church in Delray Beach. Cross Ministries, on behalf of The Caring Kitchen, organized the pickup and distribution efforts of fresh and frozen food consisting of hams, bread, fruits and vegetables. Action Courier Service provided an expert driver and a 26 foot Freightliner truck with a lift gate. The families represent over 600 children and adults totaling around 1000 people.

When I go to dinner parties, nonprofit organization meetings or am on the golf course, folks always ask me why trial lawyers file frivolous medical malpractice lawsuits. “Don’t insurance companies raise our rates when they have to pay for those suites?” they ask.

Here’s my answer: Frivolous lawsuit claims are overblown. They’re circulated by powerful corporate interests that want to escape accountability for the dangerous products they market to the public. Government agencies that track civil suits report declining numbers.

The real problem is the insurance industry gouging physicians. Annual statements of the 15 targets companies handling malpractice insurance show that premium collections increased by 120 percent between 2000 and 2007, while claims rose by only 5.7 percent.

The rate of premium increase was 21 times greater than the rate of increase in claims payments during the same period. None of that has anything to do with lawsuits and everything to do with the insurance industry stuffing its pockets at the expense of the American public.

BNI Bikers raise money during Christmas Toys in the Sun Run

The Christmas Toys in the Sun Run snarled traffic along parts of Atlantic Boulevard, Interstate 95 and I-595 yesterday for over 3 hours. Sponsored by the South Florida President's Council, the 20th annual toy run attracted more than 30,000 toy-bearing riders from as far away as New York, Detroit and California.

The procession started at the Pompano Harness Track and ended at Markham Park in Sunrise. The motorcyclists riding on everything from wildly stretched choppers to traditional touring bikes took to the road, where they were greeted by waving spectators who had pulled up lawn chairs to watch the parade.

The toys are distributed to needy families across Broward County. Most of the money raised through the run benefits Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, a Hollywood facility known for successfully treating pediatric cancer patients.

Boca Raton BNI Business Exchange was well represented. Kurt Heide, president of American Pioneer Mortgage, Mike and Debbie Marzano of Jemstone Construction and Dr. Rick Marrotte, Optometrist from Boca Raton, all rode in the event.
